My submission is the epilogue I wrote for Spa Daze.

A blurb book that chronicles the adventures of Peggy and Kathy as they indulge several underknown and overknown California spas. It's a diary of emails, photos and menus, necessarily messy massages, coffee or wine induced musings, that take place, for the most part, in nurturing venues where wearing a bikini would be considered totally over dressed.

There are only two of them in publication, and I love them both.

SPANAKED

It's not unusual to me that two women would meet for the first time totally naked. Then join other totally naked women to be exfoliated, oiled and messaged by still more, almost totally naked, Korean women.

I am certainly not looking thru that predacious totally naked "third eye" monocle all men seem to have, nor do I even envy the first hand view from the multi-facetted naked eye of the "fly on the wall" that was certainly there, somewhere, flying around totally naked, one facet on the mugwort, another on that dam window, and all the rest taking in each individual totally naked women all at once.

To my naked eye, it's simply a beautiful thing, when beautiful things, take the time become more beautiful. Relaxed, and perfumed, then just lay around, totally naked, like totally naked Goddess, that are totally naked.

We do love the pictures. Matt has been out of town and won't be home until late tomorrow night, but I went through and put a bunch of pictures in a folder and labeled it Proofs. I don't have 350 yet, but I'll go through them again on Friday afternoon so that we can get that many.

I can't remember what the proof magazine actually looks like...how big are the pictures and how is it bound? I'm sorry, I thought I'd remember and now it seems like forever ago.

Also, how do we let you know what we'd like to see in black & white? By picture #? Another folder?

I don't have anything against shopping images. I don't and I don't consider myself a purist because I don't. I was intrigued with the work of Jerry Uelsmann while I was at Columbia in the late 70's and still find his work, art, or Maybe photoart, but not a photograph.

The WPD contest images are a wash with adobe fluff. (It's not just WPD, WPPI, Getty, and even Pulitzer prize submissions are so post up, that they have crossed the line of a real photograph) Fluff trumps true composition today, but fails miserably in hindsight.

No wedding photographer today would place a couples kissing image in a vignetted champaign glass typically seen in most albums in the 80's, but what's happening is almost as photographically cliché: Adding everything form the perfect sunset, to the beach, to a thinner bride.

Again perhaps photoart, but a photograph?

I wonder what would happen to the amount of WPD contest submissions you receive, if you limited the amount of photoshop work on an image to 5% or less?

Maybe we need a new term to replace the abused title of photojournalist, with photoshopperer.

Seven years ago, in partnership with my wife Peggy, I covered my first wedding. Our strategy was two fold; Peggy handles all the logistics of the assignment, from organizing the on-location formal portraits to producing the final album. I explore the visual, as with all my assignments, looking between the lines of the script to capture images of thoughts, fleeting intimate moments, the unique energy, a simple beauty and an understated elegance that ultimately defines the story of a most significant day in a couple’s life.

Free from the constraints of many photographers who work for large studios, I have no set or cookie cutter formula when shooting an event. Our couples design their own coverage and expect the high level of personal service we provide.

My philosophy for photographing weddings is a simple decidedly nonabrasive style which allows me to capture images naturally as the day unfolds. My goal is to visually tell the story of your wedding day, not to direct it.

For the must have or more formal aspect of the assignment, I rely on my photo coordinator. Following your script of shots you want, Peggy makes sure that all these photos are setup and done in the most efficient way possible.

As a photojournalist I will candidly document every moment of your wedding day from the pre-ceremony to the dancing at your reception. You will never stand in front of a backdrop or be pulled away from your wedding celebration to “do photos”.

I would encourage you to come and see my portfolio first hand. It is a visual representation of my years of experience, hard work, and pride in my field. My presentation will include samples of all my work, Commercial, Editorial and of course Weddings, along with a further discussion of my unique approach to wedding photography.
